35 athletes will run Prague marathon and 2RUN

04.05.2018

Sunday's marathon and 2RUN, the toughest races in the Yellow Ribbon Prison Run series 2018, will be attended by 35 runners including two ex-prisoners. The charity race, which highlights the difficult employability of people with a criminal past, will be a part of Volkswagen Marathon Prague event on May 6, 2018.

All the Yellow Ribbon Prison Run races - half marathon, marathon, 2RUN and relays – have been organized as part of the RunCzech Running League from April through June. Prisoners, former convicts, crime victims, corporate directors and managers, civil servants, NGO employees, sports fans, and dozens of others have run side by side.

The Yellow Ribbon project advances public awareness and acceptance of reintegrating ex-offenders into society. The project focuses on the problem of difficult employability of ex-offenders, and it aims at creating employment opportunities for them - linking them to a wider community, thereby contributing to crime prevention, reoffending rate cuts and securing a safer society in general.

“It is great news that former convicts, who have succeeded in social reintegratation, will run such a difficult race as a marathon with us. Some of them started running with the Yellow Ribbon Run in prisons. By running such a difficult race they have proved their will and intention to live a good life. It works for them with the support of their community and society,” said Gábina Slováková, Světlá nad Sázavou Prison director and the Yellow Ribbon Project initiator said.

According to Carlo Capalbo, the chairman of the RunCzech Organizing Committee, Volkswagen Prague Marathon with the record of 2:05:39 is the fastest May marathon in history. The record is held by a Kenyan Eliud Kiptanui, who ran this fast in 2010.

Alongside the marathon, our athletes will also compete in the 2RUN race, in which two runners share the marathon distance.

The 2018 edition of the prison run is co-organized with the help from the Prison Service of the Czech Republic, non-profit organization RUBIKON Centre, Czech Probation and Mediation Service, and RunCzech. The project is held under the auspices of the Czech Minister of Justice, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, and the Public Defender of Rights.

Yellow Ribbon Prison Run 2018 will be attended by a record number of runners

15.03.2018

This year's third edition of the Yellow Ribbon Prison Run (YRR) will be attended by almost 600 runners. This is a record number of people supporting a second chance for those ex-offenders, who completed their prison sentence, and have been seeking a return to a normal life since. Last year, 374 athletes ran, and the first edition of the YRR in 2016 was attended by only 32 people.
The YRR project advances public awareness and acceptance of reintegrating ex-offenders into society. The project focuses on the problem of difficult employability of ex-offenders, and it aims at creating employment opportunities for them - linking them to a wider community, thereby contributing to crime prevention, reoffending rate cuts and securing a safer society in general.
The first of the “yellow“ races - half marathon - will take place already on April, 7th. A press conference to commemorate the event along with a half-marathon training will take place on March 22, at 11 am at the Kotlaska Community Center. A new song composed by the prisoners from the Kuřim Prison will be presented at the press event. Its official version will be released after the recording in the new studio of the critically acclaimed Tap Tap band.
The races - half marathon, marathon, 2RUN and relays - will take place as part of the RunCzech Running League from April to June. Prisoners, former convicts, crime victims, corporate directors and managers, civil servants, NGO employees, sports fans, and dozens of others will run side by side.
Every year, more than 10.000 ex-offenders complete their prison sentence in the Czech Republic, and are released from various prisons. It is disheartening that they have to live with the stigma of having served time behind bars which can be more punishing than the prison sentence itself. Many ex-offenders find themselves literally stepping into a second prison. But this time, it would be a prison with invisible bars, the one of suspicion, mistrust and discrimination. Even the best rehabilitation regime during their incarceration is of no use, if ex-offenders find themselves rejected at home. This is the reason the Yellow Ribbon Project promotes a more accepting society, one that is willing to give ex-offenders a second chance to start a new chapter in their lives.
"I am very pleased that we are opening already the third edition of the Yellow Ribbon Run, and the numbers of runners and supporters have been steadily growing. It is an important signal to our prison staff confirming the significance of connecting our demanding work in prisons with an effective after-release care. Only then can we take a step forward in fighting recidivism rates,“ says Gabriela Slováková, director of the women's prison in Světlá nad Sázavou, and initiator of the YRR project. „We also need to signal to our clients with a criminal past that if they work hard, they will be given a second chance," she adds. According to Slováková, the Yellow Ribbon project has already shown positive results. "Our partners – big employers - created 296 jobs for prisoners and 96 jobs for ex-offenders in 2017, and we thank them so much," she added.
“Recent labour market development suggests improving chances for the people with a criminal past thanks to decreasing unemployment rates and an improving public awareness of their needs,” says Andrea Matoušková, director of the Czech Probation and Mediation Service. “Some Czech employers began noticing that people with criminal history could be good and loyal employees," adds Andrea Matoušková
"The social reintegration of ex-prisoners into the community reduces levels of recidivism significantly. When we help these people to secure a job and get back to normal life, we also help ourselves. The Yellow Ribbon Run is one of the projects that also helps us bring the issue to the eyes of the public, which is essential," explains Dagmar Doubravová, director of the non-profit organization RUBIKON Center.
The total of 73 runners with a yellow ribbon pinned to their T-shirts - including nine prisoners from and one ex-offender - will hit the track at Sportisimo 1/2Maraton Prague on April, 7th. According to the organizers, the total number of runners in all the Yellow Ribbon Prison Run races will climb to 600.
“Together with the entire RunCzech team, we participated at the birth of the fantastic Yellow Ribbon Run project. We continue to support the project in 2018 with great joy. The fact that people deserve to get a second chance is true more than ever, and I am very glad that running can help people start new lives. Running is just a great sport, which I have been saying for more than twenty years !" adds Carlo Capalbo, RunCzech President and Chairman of the IAAF Road Running Commission.
The 2018 edition of the prison run is co-organized with the help from the Prison Service of the Czech Republic, nonprofit organization RUBIKON Centre, Czech Probation and Mediation Service, and RunCzech. The project is held under the auspices of the Czech Minister of Justice, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, and the Public Defender of Rights. Prisoners and ex-convicts will try to make it and get a job

22.05.2017

in a Practical Job Interview Training at the hotel Hilton Prague

The twenty-five-year-old Michaela is currently serving her sentence in a Prison Světlá nad Sázavou. She knows well it was her mistake that sent her to prison in the past, and she is firmly determined not to repeat it again. Michaela works hard to complete her education in the prison and plans to get a good job after her release: she hopes to start a new chapter in her life in the future. Michaela is one of the five inmates who will attend the Practical Job Interview Training on Wednesday 24 May together with 14 former convicts. The event is organized within the Career Counseling by the hotels Hilton Prague and Hilton Prague Old Town and the non-profit organization RUBIKON Centre.

The interviews will be followed by a Yellow Ribbon Run training for O2 Prague Relay 4x5 organized by RunCzech. The specific aim of the Yellow Ribbon Run project is to encourage employers in fighting prejudice, and to give ex-convicts a chance to work.

"It is easy to sit in jail and spend years in the bedroom. But I don´t want to. First I want to complete my education and get a diploma and I hope in finding a good job after my release from prison. That's why I started running and joined the Yellow Ribbon Run project. I'm close to sports because I did athletics in my childhood. The fact that I will run for so many people who need a second chance is a real big motivation," says Michaela.

The series of Wednesday events will be opened by a press conference with Michael Specking, General Director of hotel Hilton Prague; Carlo Capalbo, President of the RunCzech Organizing Committee, Petr Dohnal, General Director of the Prison Service, Gabriela Slováková, Director of the women´s Prison Světlá nad Sázavou, Lenka Ouředníčková, Director of Services of RUBIKON Centrum and prisoners.

“The company Hilton Worldwide focuses among others on such CSR activities, which support the work integration. Hotel industry offers a wide range of job opportunities and so it can make the start of new employees easier and may help them to solve their often very difficult life situation. I am very happy and proud of being able to be part of such initiatives,“ quoted Michael Specking, General Director of the hotel Hilton Prague.
And Carlo Capalbo, President of the RunCzech Organizing Committee, follows: “We support the Yellow Ribbon Run Project for one single reason – people simply deserve a second chance. And if you get a job, the probability that you use your second chance well and return back to normal life is much higher. A meaningful spending of free time is also important, and here the running can serve very well.”
Job Interview Simulations are a practical demonstration of how to help people with a criminal past and support their re-employment in the labour market without prejudice.
Job simulations create a unique space where real employers and ex-convicts searching for a job meet at one table. "It has often happened to us that our trainee impressed the interviewer and he or she was offered a job on the spot," says Lenka Ouředníčková, the Director of Services in RUBIKON Centrum. "Candidates have the opportunity to test how a real job interview works in practice, they learn to communicate with their employer and they learn to talk more clearly and effectively about their criminal history. Employers, on the other hand, have described their experience as an "aha" moment – face to face a job applicant with a criminal past, they are often confronted with a skilled person motivated to work and their prejudice goes away," continues Lenka Ouředníčková.

It is important to mention that ten companies involved in the Yellow Ribbon Run project currently employ prisoners and give them a chance to get a job after their release. In recent years, these companies have created about 300 jobs for inmates and nearly 100 for former convicts.

The Yellow Ribbon Run project is held under the auspices of the Czech Minister of Justice, Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the Public Defender of Rights.
Races with a yellow ribbon – half marathon, marathon and relays – are being held under the auspices of three RunCzech races, and will be attended altogether by 900 runners. The 2017 edition of the prison run is co-organized with the help from the Prison Service of the Czech Republic, the Business Leaders Forum platform, which associates socially responsible firms, the nonprofit organization RUBIKON Centre, the Czech Probation and Mediation Service and RunCzech.

Will the prisoners Jirka, Marián, Oldřich and Libor complete the Prague marathon? Come and cheer the

03.05.2017

On the 7th of May, Jirka, Marián, Oldřich and Libor, inmates of four Czech prisons, will run a marathon together with up to 50 fellow runners. All of them will wear t-shirts decorated with a yellow ribbon aiming to draw attention to the problem of difficult employability of inmates released from prison. The sport event from the Yellow Ribbon Prison Run series 2017 is held as part of Volkswagen Prague Marathon. Additional 24 athletes will do their best to complete 2RUN race runs, with two runners sharing a marathon distance of 20 and 22 kilometers. Both prestigious sport events are organized by RunCzech.

"When we started running around the prison court, the other convicts shouted at us and laughed at us. I did not care, I was rather sorry for them. The most important thing for me is my mother, who is my greatest fan and supporter,” says Jirka, the young runner, who is currently serving his sentence in the Vinařice Prison in the central Bohemia. "I am going to be released soon and what I know for sure today is that I will take running with me to forget all the crap and dangerous thoughts I might have. I want to continue to do what I enjoy, and at the same time to prove to myself and to my mother that I can live differently than I used to live," he adds.

The specific aim of the Yellow Ribbon Run project is to encourage employers in fighting prejudice, and to give ex-convicts a chance to work. Moreover, the motto of the Yellow Ribbon Runs is, „Run from prejudices“ and “Let´s give ex-offenders a second chance”.
It is very often a mere prejudice that ruins ex-convicts´ prospect of getting a job. Last year, 10,271 people were released from Czech prisons. And according to surveys, more than two-thirds of Czech companies require background checks when recruiting. Moreover, 55 percent of employers never employ people with a criminal record. The numbers say only a third of ex-offenders that are motivated to work actually succeed in securing a job.

“The upcoming Yellow Ribbon race is the most challenging one – it´s marathon, a royal discipline. I firmly believe that if the convicts succeed in fulfilling all the tasks, working and adhering to the strict regime in the prison, they have a great chance to manage the situation after the release," says Gabriela Slováková, the director of the women's Prison Světlá nad Sázavou and initiator of the run. "The fact that with the strong support of my colleagues, they trained for the marathon while serving their sentence perhaps proves their honest will to start again and better. Let's give them a chance and let's cheer them on together," she adds.

"I'm so glad that the Yellow Ribbon Prison Run is getting so much popularity. It's not just about the number of runners - although fifty marathon runners is a wonderful number, but it´s also about those who learn about this meritorious project. The more people will get to know the Yellow Ribbon Run project, the more people can really help. Our slogan for this year races is All Runners Are Beautiful meaning that running is a great thing for everyone. And it is true especially in this case - everybody deserves a second chance," says RunCzech President of the Organizing Committee, Carlo Capalbo.
